We’re nourishing leadership and skill building opportunities for members of our community
Our Community Ambassador Program strengthens community connections, enhances our offerings with insights from the communities, and provides valuable professional training opportunities.
We offer part-time, paid positions to local community members interested in the health and well-being of their community that will be supporting in-field operations for our mobile farmers’ market, VeggieRx cooking demonstrations, and urban agriculture projects, as well as outreach and engagement.

Community Compost Hub Ambassador
(Part-Time)
Support our community compost hub in San Mateo County by helping build and maintain compost systems at the Phoenix Garden, connect with the community at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market, and lead compost workshops and demonstrations!

Food Access Community Ambassador
(Part-Time)
Support setting-up and stocking the mobile farmers’ market truck, assisting with processing transactions for market shoppers, and communicating with community members about all the fresh fruits & veggies on the truck!

Who can apply to become a Community Ambassador?
We prioritize applicants 18 years or older who reside within the community where they work and are passionate about the health and well-being of their neighborhood.
Are these positions paid?
Yes, the positions are paid at an hourly rate. Community Ambassadors receive benefits for part-time positions (defined as less than 30 hours per week) including sick-time accruals.
Will I receive any certifications, training, or other benefits from participating?
Yes. Community Ambassadors will receive professional job training including education on community nutrition, food access, urban agriculture initiatives, customer service, community outreach, and/or program operations. Ambassadors will receive certificates of participation and gain valuable work experience that can enhance their resumes for future employment opportunities.
How will I be supported throughout my role as an Ambassador?
Ambassadors will be supported through regular check-ins with program staff and opportunities to attend professional development trainings.
How long is the Community Ambassador Program?
The program length varies, but positions typically last between 6 to 10 months, depending on the specific project or cohort you are involved in. Ambassadorships are part-time, temporary positions and are typically between 3-12 hours per week sometimes more depending on the position.
How does this compare to a paid internship?
If you are a student and need academic credit, a Community Ambassadorship could be used for academic credit, however, the term is generally longer than a traditional internship and you would be under contract to complete the Ambassadorship as agreed upon beyond your academic term.
Do I need to provide proof of legal eligibility to work in the US?
Yes. Because the Community Ambassador role is a paid part-time temporary role, you would be required to show proof of eligibility to work in the US. This would include a passport, or a driver’s license and a social security number, or, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
