Freshest Cargo: Mobile Farmers’ Market

The Freshest Cargo Mobile Farmers’ Market is a “farmers’ market on wheels” that addresses issues related to lack of access to fresh, locally-grown produce in the Bay Area.

Freshest Cargo DisplayWe source produce directly from local farmers to sell at sites across the Bay Area. Our goal is to serve food desert communities, where fresh, quality produce is not accessible. To achieve this goal, our model includes sales sites at mixed-to-high income sites which helps us to cover our operating costs. Without these sites, it would be impossible to maintain affordable prices in these low income communities.

Our primary operating season is Spring and Summer, when local produce is abundant. Currently, the bulk of our operation is in Contra Costa County and Alameda County; in 2015 we will be expanding to serve Santa Clara County. If you have suggestions of where the Freshest Cargo program should operate, or would like to have us at a special event, please contact freshestcargo@freshapproach.org.

For more information on the customized Freshest Cargo vehicle, download our specifications guide.

This project’s pilot phase was supported by a grant from the USDA Farmers’ Market Promotion Program which ended in 2014. We are currently supported  by Kaiser Permanente Diablo Community Benefit and Kaiser Permanente South Bay Community Benefit for work in the diablo region of Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties, respectively.
